Good Evening CES Families Coming Up

Class Field Trip Tshirt Orders Due September 29th!

Important Change this Year!!!!

We will not be selling different color class t-shirts for field trips. The blue youth shirt seen at the top of the form sent home  (and attached) will be used SCHOOL-WIDE for field trips and spirit days. Order large enough and your child should get a couple of years wear out of them. The quality is excellent!!
There will not be a deadline extension for ordering so we have these shirts ready to support our earliest scheduled school trips.  Checks should be made payable to Central Elementary PTA. This is a fundraiser and all proceeds go to the CES PTA.
Don’t forget to order your matching spiritwear!

Click HERE to view what we have to offer this year.  Paper copies went home in backpack mail last week.

PTA/PTO Q and A
Are you free for an hour this Thursday evening?  Stop by for an informal PTA vs. PTA Q and A in the CES cafeteria from 6:15-7:15 p.m.  PTA officers and Jim McGee, a CES dad and our pro bono legal counsel, will be available for questions and conversation.  Don’t forget!  We vote on whether or not to become a PTO on October 2nd!

Sign Up Transition
Sign ups have begun through ParentSquare. We’re still looking for one volunteer to help with Picture Day and will be posting a call for Book Fair volunteers this week. If you’re not yet on ParentSquare, see below!

Wondering Why a PTO?

CES has been a PTA for many years, and these years have been great for the school community.  Recently, the PTA Executive Board has come to believe that leaving the PTA and becoming a PTO could be EVEN BETTER for our school community – even better for students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

Why should we consider a change, you wonder?  (Because we did too.)  With a PTA, we have been a part of a national organization.  The dues we pay to the organization pays for advocacy and lobbying efforts at the state and federal government levels.  We pay for staff, office space, and all of the resources involved with a large-scale advocacy and lobbing operation.  We have been bound by the  by-laws of the Maryland PTA, and, to reiterate, we have paid state and national membership dues.

With a PTO, we could be our own organization.  Would we still be bound and governed by bylaws and financial oversight?  Yes, absolutely.  But we would write and you, our general membership, would approve those by-laws, which could address more issues of local governance rather than so much required by the state organization. Because a CES PTO is governed by and concerned with CES ONLY,  we would pay no state or national membership dues – which means every last penny raised for CES PTO stays at CES and benefits your children (and teachers, administrators, and YOU) directly.

The links below have been helpful to the Executive Board as we have researched the possibility of becoming a PTO.  Please review them, consider, and come to Back to School Night and subsequent informational meetings to ask questions and learn more.  As always, thank you for being a part of the amazing, unique, and incredibly supportive Central Elementary School community.

PTA to PTO

Please plan to join the CES PTA Executive Board on Monday, October 2nd at 9:30am for a General Membership meeting.  We will be voting to transition our status from PTA to PTO.

Fall Yoga is Back!

Afterschool Yoga is back this fall!  Your children will learn to strengthen their growing bodies and fire up their imaginations.  Yoga will be held on Tuesdays for 3rd-5th grades and Thursdays for K-2nd grades.  Please see attached flyers for K-2 and 3-5 for more information or contact Robin Countryman at robin@wholekidsyoga.com if you have any questions.

First School Spirit Night

Our first Spirit Night will be on the very first day of school (9/5).  Celebrate the new year at Sweet Frog in Edgewater.  The hours are 4pm-9pm.  Be sure to mention Central Elementary and 25% of proceeds will go to the PTA!

Update on ParentSquare:

A county-wide memorandum released by the Board of Ed has restricted the use of certain applications, based on their terms of service. As such, we will not be using ParentSquare as a parent/teacher tool this year.

We WILL however, be using ParentSquare as a PTA communications hub to eventually replace this eBlast, the CES PTA Facebook page, and Sign Up genius.  In the future, important school events dates/calendar, club announcements, fundraising opportunities AND PTA sign ups will occur within ParentSquare. All school PTA information will now be sent to your computer or phone via email and/or text, or you can download the free app (iphone & android) which allows you to quickly view upcoming events!

WHO?
Parents of active Central Elementary students ONLY. We need you to opt-in to join the site.  EVERY parent can have their own account on ParentSquare, so get your spouse/co-guardian signed up too!

HOW?
In order to join this community, YOU MUST OPT-IN.

Exciting News on the PTA Communications Front!! Action Required

The PTA has funded a new communications portal for the 2017/18 school year to communicate with parents at Central Elementary–it’s called ParentSquare. The teachers, staff, PTA and parents will all use this one tool to communicate with each other. This means that beyond the first couple of months of the school year, you won’t see many newsletters or papers coming home in your child’s folder- nor be receiving the eBlast.  ParentSquare will be a one-stop-shop for CES communications.  You can even use it to download events to your personal calendar!

ParentSquare is designed to keep parents informed and facilitate participation at school. It provides a safe and secure way for the teachers, PTA and parents to:

● Send and receive school and class information
● View the school directory and find staff/teacher contact information
● Share documents and files
● See calendar items
● Sign up to volunteer or bring in items
● See photos of events
● and much more . . . all in one centralized place!

All school PTA information will now be sent to your computer or phone via email and/or text, or you can download the free app (iphone & android) which allows you to quickly view upcoming events!
